Drip Edge

The L-shaped metal at your roof edge that directs water cleanly into gutters.

Drip edge is an L-shaped metal flashing installed along the eaves and rakes (sides) of your roof. It creates a clean break between the roof edge and the fascia board, directing water runoff into the gutters rather than allowing it to seep behind the gutter or run down the fascia. Drip edge is typically made from aluminum or galvanized steel and is installed beneath the underlayment at the eaves and over the underlayment at the rakes.

Why It Matters

Many Bay Area homes built in the 1950s through 1970s were constructed without drip edge — it was not required by code at the time. Without it, water wicks back under the roofing material along the edges, causing fascia rot, soffit damage, and even foundation erosion over time. Installing drip edge during a re-roof is inexpensive (typically $300-$600 for a standard home) and provides decades of protection. It is now required by California building code on all new roof installations.

Drip Edge FAQ

Does my home need drip edge if it already has gutters?
Yes. Gutters and drip edge serve different purposes. Drip edge prevents water from wicking back under your roofing material and rotting the fascia board. Gutters collect the water after it leaves the roof. Without drip edge, water can run behind the gutters and cause damage that is invisible until it becomes severe.
Can drip edge be added to an existing roof?
It can, but it is much easier and more effective to install during a re-roof. Retrofitting drip edge on an existing roof requires lifting the first course of shingles or tiles, which risks damage. We always include drip edge in our re-roof projects at no additional labor cost — you only pay for the material.
